It is my considered judgment that my oath to support and defend the Constitution constrains me from claiming unilateral authority to determine which electoral votes should be counted and which should not

The United States’ Vice President, Mike Pence, has changed his Twitter biography to a picture of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, following the events that unfolded in the US on Wednesday, January 6.

In a stunning rebuke of his boss, Pence changed the bio after Trump criticized him for not “helping him out” in the Electoral College vote certification process, using his ceremonial role as the President of the Senate.

Pence on Wednesday publicly broke with Trump, saying he could not submit to demands to overthrow the results of the election.

In a letter forwarded to the lawmakers, Pence made it known that he has no “unilateral authority to decide presidential contests” and could not change the results of the election.

He noted that “It is my considered judgment that my oath to support and defend the Constitution constrains me from claiming unilateral authority to determine which electoral votes should be counted and which should not.”

While reacting to this year’s election, he stated that there was controversy surrounding the election.

“Some approach this year’s quadrennial tradition with great expectation, and others with dismissive disdain. Some believe that as Vice President, I should be able to accept or reject electoral votes unilaterally. Others believe that electoral votes should never be challenged in a Joint Session of Congress.”

Furthermore, he stated that neither view is correct, after a careful study of the US Constitution, laws, and history.
