Pa Muibi Shonubi, Richard Oghenerhoro and Barr Inibehe Effiong have been honoured at the Gani Fawehinmi Impact and Integrity Awards 2022, organized by the HEDA Resource Centre and supported by McArthur Foundation.
Pa Muibi Shonubi emerged as the overall winner of the ‘Outstanding Integrity Award’ for his exemplary and truthful lifestyle when he returned a huge amount of money that he found in 1971.
While reading Pa Shonubi’s bio, it was said that Pa Sonubi as a driver found a bag full of money in his taxi and returned it to Police in Ibadan while announcements were made on the radio and the owner got the money back.
Pa Sonubi was ridiculed by his family members and friends for returning such money, which made him relocate out of Ibadan to Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Richard Oghenerhoro also received the Valuable Whistle Blower award while human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, received the Outstanding Impact Award.
While reacting to the award on his social media page, Inibehe Effiong commended HEDA for organizing the award, which according to him would immortalize the principles that Gani Fawehinmi stood for while he was alive.
Effiong said, “this award has inspired me to continue to uphold the principles and values that my role model, Gani Fawehinmu, lived and died for.”
Earlier, Lanre Suraju, the Executive Director of HEDA Resource Centre shared that the award is being organized to show that there are Nigerians who are still standing against corrupt practices in their respective offices.
Suraju said, “this is not an award for favour, but people who really deserve it and are hardly recognized in society.”
He decried how corruption seems to be the norm in society and emphasised the need to stop the “tradition of anomaly in our systems.”
The fifth edition of the Gani Fawehinmi Impact and Integrity Awards had in attendance anti-corruption crusaders and agencies, human rights lawyers, members of the media, and civil society actors.
