The World Association for Christian Communication (WACC) Africa Region has elected Lekan Otufodunrin of Nigeria as President and Amie Joof-Cole of Senegal as Vice President at its General Assembly held on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
The new executive, which will serve for four years, has pledged to implement programmes promoting digital, gender and climate justice across the continent.
Otufodunrin of Journalists for Christ International Outreach, Nigeria, and Joof-Cole of the Inter Africa Network for Women, Media, Gender and Development (FAMEDEV), Senegal, will both serve on the WACC UK Board.
Other members of the executive are Blessing Oladunjoye of the BO Foundation for Inclusive Media, Nigeria, as Secretary, and Mwendwa Kivuva, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Kenya ICT Action Network (KICTANet), as Treasurer.
George Stewart, a media development specialist from Liberia, and Opeyemi Lawal, a Nigerian journalist, were elected as alternate executive members.
In his acceptance remarks, Otufodunrin pledged that the new executive would implement programmes to advance WACC’s focus on digital justice, gender justice and climate justice across Africa.
He said the executive would work to promote the organisation’s priorities and strengthen its regional impact.
Kehinde Adegboyega, Convener of the West Africa Digital Rights Defenders Coalition, delivered a keynote address titled Ensuring Digital Justice in Africa.
Adegboyega called for universal access to digital technologies, safeguards for human rights and data sovereignty. He identified capacity building, policy advocacy, coalition building and community action as key elements of a regional roadmap for digital justice.
“No digital future is just until it is inclusive, free and grounded in dignity for all Africans,” Adegboyega said.
Dr Sarah Macharia, Staff Liaison for the WACC Africa Region, attended the assembly and commended the outgoing executive, led by Matomklawè Kpalla, for its accomplishments.
She urged the newly elected team to build on the previous administration’s work and strengthen WACC’s standing across the region.
