The suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, has proposed to call three defence witnesses in his trial on charges of false and non-declaration of assets ongoing before the Code of Conduct Tribunal in Abuja.

The suspended CJN, disclosed this through his lead counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), at the resumed hearing in the case on Monday.

The tribunal had on Friday ordered Onnoghen to open his defence after ruling that he had a case to answer in respect of the six counts preferred against him.

‎At the resumed hearing on Monday, Awomolo said one of the proposed defence witnesses would be a Director at the Code of Conduct Bureau, Mrs Theresa Nwafor.

When pressed for the number of witnesses, Awomolo said the defence would call,‎ “Two or three”.

The senior lawyer then applied to the Danladi Umar-led CCT to make an order that a subpoena be issued and served on Nwafor summoning her to appear before the tribunal to testify in the case.

The lead prosecuting counsel, Mr. Aliyu Umar (SAN), said he had no objection to the application.

The tribunal chairman promptly granted the application and summoned Nwafor to appear before the tribunal at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
