As part of efforts to improve efficiency, accountability, and compliance in public financial management, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has conducted a two-day in-house capacity-building training for staff of its Accounts and Audit Departments.
The training, held on May 6 and 7, 2026, at Life Refreshing Cafeteria in Wuse II, Abuja, and coordinated by the Commission’s Finance and Accounts Department, was aimed to enhance staff knowledge of current standards and procedures guiding public sector financial management and reporting, in line with ongoing federal government reforms.
The sessions focused on key components of the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS), currently being implemented by the Federal Government of Nigeria. Topics covered included guidelines for preparing government financial statements, management of public assets and liabilities, and recent reforms in public sector accounting practices.
Interactive discussions were also held to address practical challenges encountered within the departments and reinforce participants’ understanding of the concepts taught.
Speaking at the opening session, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Ayuba Gufwan, stressed the importance of developing internal expertise to reduce dependence on external consultants.
He described the training as timely and urged participants to apply the knowledge gained towards strengthening the Commission’s financial management processes.
“For some time, the Commission faced challenges due to limited expertise among staff, particularly in the Accounting and Audit units. Relying solely on consultants meant that knowledge was not retained within the system. Files were difficult to locate, and there was little continuity once consultants completed their assignments and left,” he said.
According to the Commission, the training equipped staff with updated knowledge and practical skills needed to improve compliance with statutory reporting requirements and strengthen internal financial controls.
Director of Finance and Accounts, Zainab Sulaiman Shehu, expressed satisfaction with the level of participation and engagement throughout the programme.
Facilitators for the training were drawn from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to continuous staff development as part of broader efforts to improve service delivery, transparency, and accountability in its operations.
