The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State Chapter, has honoured Motunrayo Alaka, Executive Director and CEO of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ), as its ‘Iconic Woman of the Month’ for June.
The award was announced in a statement jointly signed by NAWOJ Lagos Chairperson, Jumoke Falayi Johnson, and Secretary, Anu M. Thomas.
The prestigious recognition celebrates Alaka’s distinguished career, her advocacy for press freedom, and her consistent efforts to promote gender equity and elevate women in the media industry across Nigeria and Africa.
Through her work at the WSCIJ, Alaka has driven impactful investigative journalism initiatives and championed the empowerment of female journalists. Her work with the Report Women! project has provided training, mentorship, and support to many women in the profession, helping them advance into leadership roles.
Speaking on the selection, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Lagos stated that Alaka embodies the resilience, intellect, and progressive vision that the “Iconic Woman of the Month” initiative seeks to honor.

The NAWOJ Lagos “Iconic Woman of the Month” initiative is a monthly spotlight designed to celebrate outstanding Nigerian women who are taking significant strides, breaking barriers, and leaving indelible footprints in their respective fields” added Johnson.
Alaka joins past recipients of the honour, Reverend Mother Esther Abimbola Ajayi, Dr. Abimbola Abosede Oyetunde, Mrs. Sola Salako-Ajulo, Professor Abigail Ogwezzy Ndisika and the late Alhaja Kudirat Olayinka Abiola, recognized posthumously on June 4.
