As the Covid-19 induced lockdown continues for another 14 days, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Lagos State Chapter calls on the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police to ensure adequate security measures are put in place to guarantee that citizens do not suffer double jeopardy.
NAWOJ insists that Putting adequate security measures in place would stem the spate of violence and robbery attacks across the state.
NAWOJ Lagos in a press statement signed by it Chairperson, Comrade Adeola Ekine recalls that towards the end of the initial 14 days lockdown, there were reports of robbery attacks in some communities in Ogun and Lagos States, which the police were able to respond swiftly to and restored law and order.
The association however cautions that there is need to put stringent security measures in place in the state, so that residents can be at rest as the lockdown continues for another 14-day period.
The police needs to do more by ensuring adequate personnel are deployed to the trouble prone areas.
The NAWOJ chair also condemns the activities of robbers, hoodlums and cult groups in some areas within the state, which has caused panic among members of the public.
“Everyone is affected by the lockdown and hoodlums should not see it as an avenue to violate public peace.”
NAWOJ is concerned that the social distance campaign will be difficult to achieve if security is left in the hands of the youth
NAWOJ is of the opinion that the lockdown would only be worth it if adequate security is provided along with sufficient palliative incentives.
