The National Assembly is working towards providing constitutional backing for Disability laws at national and state levels.

This was disclosed by Special Adviser on Special Needs and Equal Opportunity to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Barr Abdulsalami Idowu during a consultation forum with Executive members of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, JONAPWD and cluster heads in Lagos.

The consultation forum was convened by Hon. Busuyi Omopariola, Board Member of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities representing  South West Zone. The forum was convened in all South West States with the aim of harvesting issues perculair to the region.

Speaking further, Barr Idowu noted that if the disability laws have constitutional backing, it would ease its implementation.

He also disclosed that the speaker of the House of Representatives is working towards strengthening the capacity of lawmakers to be responsive to disability issues.

Barr Idowu disclosed that, “the HoR has a standing committee on disability.

“We are also working on ensuring that laws and policies that are being developed in the country are disability-sensitive,” he added.
