The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has called on the Nigerian government to significantly boost budget allocations for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the 2024 supplementary budget and the upcoming 2025 budget.
In a statement released by the Executive Director, Auwal Ibrahim Musa, CISLAC emphasized the urgent need to address the socio-economic challenges faced by over 30 million Nigerians living with disabilities.
The Group highlighted that despite the 2018 Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Act, implementation has been hampered by inadequate funding.
The CISLAC Boss pointed out several issues affecting PWDs, including limited access to education, high unemployment rates, inaccessible healthcare facilities, and persistent social discrimination.
“These barriers, significantly hinder PWDs’ full participation in society and their ability to contribute to national development.” He noted.
To address these challenges, CISLAC recommended increased investment in special education programs, vocational training, and accessible healthcare facilities. The organization also called for the implementation of policies promoting employment opportunities for PWDs and the development of accessible public infrastructure.
Mr Musa urged the government to tap into contingency funds to boost PWD allocations in the 2024 budget, emphasizing that inclusivity is crucial for good governance and overall national progress.
CISLAC called on all stakeholders, including the private sector and civil society, to join in promoting an inclusive society where every Nigerian, regardless of ability, can thrive and contribute to the nation’s development.
