Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa, CAPPA, has again tasked the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC to ensure the full regulation of trans fats.
The group noted that the NAFDAC Fats and Oil regulations of 2019 had received entries and comments from stakeholders since 2020, but yet to become a full legislation, which has further put Nigerians at risk.
This was made known during a 2-day training on Trans Fats Reporting for journalists, which was organized by CAPPA.
Aderonke Ige, CAPPA Associate Director, while reviewing the NAFDAC Fats and Oil Regulations, 2019 and Labeling Regulations, 2019, disclosed that the penalty provided for violation of the provisions of the regulations is minimal.
Ige noted that such penalty would not help to deter violators.
On his part, Mr. Akinbode Oluwafemi, Executive Director, CAPPA noted that it is imperative that NAFDAC takes necessary steps to ensure the safety of Nigerians by regulating the production and circulation of hydrogenated oils.
