The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities , Prof Biodun Ogunyemi has urged the public to disregard the misinformation being peddled through the media that ASUU strike was political.

The ASUU president stated that the Federal Government had failed to make fresh offer on funding for the revitalisation of the nation’s public universities and is yet to address the issue of renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement in its new offer made to the union last Monday.

ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, stated this in Strike Bulletin 9 sent to branches of the union,a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent.

Ogunyemi disclosed that although the Federal Government had improved its earlier offers, there were still critical unresolved issues. The union boss asked the He asked members to remain committed to the struggle to revitalise the education system.

“At the meeting held on January 21, 2017 between the union and the Federal Government’s agents (the Minister of Labour and Employment and Representatives of relevant government agencies), the Federal Government improved its earlier offer. However, the government has failed to address the crucial and critical issues of funding for the revitalisation of public universities in Nigeria and the re-negotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement.

“To confuse the public about our struggle, agents of the government and some haters of our principled and purposeful struggle are peddling all sorts of misinformation through the media. Members must disregard any media information unverified or not authenticated by the union,” the bulletin stated.
