Abia State Commission for the Welfare of Disabled Persons has initiated a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection to improve the lives of over 400,000 Persons with Disability (PWDs) in the state.

Mr David Anyaele, Chairman of the commission, made the statement during the meeting with Mrs Ngozi Blessing Felix, Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, to discuss collaborative opportunities.

Mr Anyaele emphasized the link between poverty and disability, stating that poverty causes disability and disability causes poverty.

“We are seeking partnership with your office to pull people with disability from poverty, reduce the impacts of disability, empower and enhance their inclusion,” He explained.

Mr Anyaele further highlighted the need for PWDs to be factored into various government programs, including digital training, palliative distribution, and cooperative support initiatives.

Mrs Ngozi Blessing Felix welcomed the initiative stating that plans are already underway to include PWDs in all ministry programs.

Mrs Felix highlighted recent successes, including empowerment initiatives by Governor Otti’s wife that benefited PWDs.

“We ensure PWDs are prioritized in every social provision and protection programme,” She stated.

Mrs Felix detailed plans for upcoming events, such as the International Day of Older Persons, where one-third of participants will be elderly persons with disabilities.

Mrs Felix further noted that the ministry is currently planning for the 2025 fiscal year and welcomes input from the Disability Commission.

She assured that while the Commission has its own budget, the Ministry would accommodate additional plans and programs to benefit PWDs.
