The National President of the Albinism Association of Nigeria (AAN), Dr. Mrs. Bisi Bamishe, has appealed to the Nigerian government for urgent action to address the growing skin cancer crisis within the albinism community.
Dr. Bamishe issued the appeal in a heartfelt New Year message, urging all levels of government, corporate organizations, and the public to take action.
She revealed that over 40 members of the albinism community are battling various stages of skin cancer, with many requiring surgeries, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy. Tragically, 16 members lost their lives to the disease last year.
She called on the government and various stakeholders to immediately take steps to tackle the devastating impact of skin cancer, which disproportionately affects persons with albinism in Nigeria.
“Many of our members are enduring immense pain in various hospitals or confined to their homes, suffering in silence and isolation.
“Skin cancer remains a critical health challenge for persons with albinism in Nigeria and without immediate intervention, the situation may spiral out of control. We therefore use this medium to make a heartfelt appeal to the government, fellow Nigerians and development partners to come to our aid.
“Your continued support can make a significant difference in addressing these challenges posed by this silent killer,” she pleaded.
Dr. Bamishe further called on the government, development partners, and Nigerians to provide resources such as sunscreens, UV-protective umbrellas, hats, and clothing to help prevent skin cancer among persons with albinism.
She also highlighted the need for free or subsidized treatment for those already affected and advocated for increased awareness campaigns in schools, markets, worship places, and the media.
“Let us rise to save lives. Together, we can turn the tide and create a future where every individual, regardless of their color or condition, can thrive and contribute meaningfully to society,” Dr. Bamishe emphasized.
Dr. Bamishe expressed gratitude to the Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary arms of government, as well as development partners, philanthropists, and the Lagos State Government, for their support in 2024. She also acknowledged the efforts of the Disability Rights Fund (DRF), AAN’s Board of Trustees, and the broader albinism community in advancing their shared goals.
The AAN president wished Nigerians a prosperous New Year, calling on the public to extend a helping hand to the albinism community during this season of renewal.
