Womanifesto Slams Senate Over Continuous Suspension of Senator Natasha, Demands Immediate Reinstatement

Womanifesto, a coalition of over 300 women’s rights organizations across Nigeria, has strongly condemned the Nigerian Senate for its ongoing refusal to reinstate Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing the action as a constitutional violation and a deliberate attack on democracy and gender equality.

The group, in a press statement signed by its convener, Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, decried that the Senate leadership has blatantly defied a Federal High Court ruling, which declared Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension unconstitutional and ordered her reinstatement, despite unlawfully excluding her from the Senate for over six months, following her suspension on March 6, 2025.

Justice Binta Nyako of The Federal High Court, Abuja, had  ruled the suspension “excessive” and unconstitutional, ordering her reinstatement by September 9, 2025.

“This brazen defiance of judicial authority is more than an institutional misstep; it is a dangerous constitutional overreach that erodes the very foundation of our democracy. When lawmakers become lawbreakers, democracy itself is imperiled.

“It is about the rights of an entire constituency deprived of representation for over six months. It is about the Senate arrogating to itself powers it does not have. It is about a judiciary whose authority is being mocked in plain sight,” said Dr. Akiyode-Afolabi.

The coalition also rejected the Senate’s reliance on spurious claims and delay tactics that subvert the Constitution and breach the rule of law warning that the Senate’s actions, led by Senate President Goodwill Akpabio, constitute a dangerous overreach that undermines Nigeria’s democratic foundations and sends a chilling message to women in politics.

Womanifesto emphasized that the exclusion of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is a gendered injustice, aimed at silencing women who seek public office. “To deny a lawfully elected senator her mandate, despite a court ruling, is to tell Nigerian women their voices can be silenced at will,” the statement read.

The coalition demanded the immediate and unconditional reinstatement of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, urging the Senate to comply with the court order and restore democratic principles.

“Democracy dies when elected voices are silenced. Democracy dies when women are deliberately excluded. Democracy dies when courts are mocked, and the Constitution treated as optional.

“Womanifesto refuses silence in the face of this assault. We stand firm that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan must return to the Senate immediately. Anything less is a betrayal of democracy, justice, and the Nigerian people,” Womanifesto stated, vowing to remain vocal until Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is reinstated.

They also called on citizens, civil society, the media, and the international community to recognize the issue as a collective threat to Nigeria’s democracy, not merely a personal dispute.

The statement was endorsed by the following women’s rights organizations across Nigeria:
