The Lagos State Chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) has congratulated Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his re-election for a second term in office and used the opportunity to remind the Governor of the People With Disability (PWD) Charter of Demands earlier presented to the Lagos State Government.
JONAPWD, in a press release issued by Adewale Adeyanju, the Public Relations Officer, and signed by the Lagos JONAPWD Chair, Dr. Adebukola Adebayo, identified key demands from the government, including making education more inclusive and accessible to children with disabilities in the State
The group also requests the government to put in place a disability-Inclusive Health Framework in line with the Special Persons Law (SPL).
On empowerment and social protection of PWDs, the Group said, “the Government should demonstrate a real and sustained commitment to a more wholistic and systemic approach to the socio-economic empowerment of PWDs”
Since mobility remains a major challenge for PWDs in a cosmopolitan state like Lagos, JONAPWD demands that the state government do more to make public transportation more accessible for PWDs and develop Accessibility Standards to guarantee universal access to public infrastructure.
