The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing mental health and psychosocial disability inclusion in Nigeria.
This followed a courtesy visit by the Founder and Executive Director of She Writes Woman, Hauwa Ojeifo, accompanied by Jennifer Abomnger, to the Commission’s headquarters. The organization restated its mission to give mental health a stronger voice in Nigeria and to empower people with psychosocial disabilities to share their stories and design solutions.
The partnership between NCPWD and She Writes Woman dates back three to four years, when both organizations co-hosted the first-ever Mental Health Roundtable at the Commission — a milestone that later informed the creation of the Mental Health Desk within NCPWD.
Executive Secretary of the Commission, Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, commended the organization for its role in amplifying the voices of people with psychosocial disabilities and pledged to deepen collaboration.
“Disability inclusion is the responsibility of all. We look forward to strengthening our partnership with She Writes Woman and other organizations to advance the cause of persons with disabilities in Nigeria,” he said.
Discussions during the visit explored areas of cooperation, including a capacity-building workshop to enhance orientation on psychosocial disabilities and strengthen the Commission’s institutional framework for mainstreaming such disabilities into its mandate.
The renewed partnership marks a step forward in ensuring that mental health remains a priority in Nigeria’s disability inclusion agenda.
