The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has called for strategic collaboration with development partners to strengthen disability data management in Nigeria.
The initiative, driven by the commission’s Planning, Research, and Statistics Department, aims to conduct a comprehensive situational analysis of disability data systems to improve data collection, coordination, and management across the country.
According to the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Ayuba Burki Gufwan, reliable disability data is essential for effective policymaking and inclusive national development.
Gufwan explained that the Commission is seeking to address existing gaps in disability data management systems, which have often limited effective planning and policy implementation in the sector.
He noted that “accurate and well-coordinated data would help government institutions and development partners design evidence-based programmes that ensure persons with disabilities are properly included in national frameworks”.
During the engagement, the commission urged development organisations present at the meeting, including Sightsavers, CBM International, and the United Nations Technical Working Group on Disability Inclusion, to collaborate on the initiative.
According to the commission, the proposed situational analysis will help to identify existing gaps in disability data systems, strengthen institutional capacity for data management, and develop a coordinated national framework for disability data
The Commission emphasised that such collaboration would enhance data-driven advocacy and policy implementation in Nigeria’s disability sector.
