The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Mr. Ayuba Gufwan, has commended the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for organizing a sensitisation workshop aimed at promoting digital citizenship among persons with disabilities.
Speaking through the Commission’s Director of Social Integration, Mr. Lawrence Idemudia, at the event held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Bolingo Xperia Hotel, Abuja, Gufwan described the initiative as a forward-thinking intervention aligned with both national and global commitments to inclusion and sustainable development.
According to Gufwan, the initiative will not only bridge digital divide but also enhance participation of PWDs in the digital ecosystem.
“As we gather here today, we are reminded of the transformative potential of information and communication technologies in advancing equality, inclusion, and independent living for persons with disabilities. The digital space when made accessible can eliminate barriers to education, employment, health, and civic participation”, he added.
The event, themed “Empowering All – Advancing Digital Citizenship and Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities,” brought together policymakers, ICT professionals, civil society actors, and members of the disability community to exchange ideas and build collective capacity around inclusive digital transformation.
Highlighting the benefits of digital inclusion, the workshop emphasized improved access to information, digital education, inclusive employment, remote work opportunities, and enhanced communication for persons with disabilities.
Other key discussions at the event included online safety, digital ethics, and privacy. A presentation by Barr. Ikem Onuegbunam explored strategies for closing the digital divide and eliminating stigma around disability in the tech space.
The high point of the workshop was the presentation of braille books by the NCC to the NCPWD. The materials were handed over by Mrs. Olatokunbo Oleyele and received by Mr. Lawrence Idemudia on behalf of the Commission. Certificates of participation were also distributed to attendees.
Mr. Gufwan reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to partnering with the NCC and other stakeholders to ensure Nigeria’s digital future is inclusive, participatory, and empowering for all citizens.
