In a significant step toward advancing disability inclusion across Nigeria, the National Association of Persons with Physical Disabilities (NAPWPD) recently paid a high-level visit to the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) at its headquarters in Abuja.

The delegation urged stronger nationwide enforcement of the accessibility regulations, highlighting persistent barriers in public infrastructure, buildings, and services that continue to limit equal participation for persons with physical disabilities.

The visit also aimed to deepen collaboration between both bodies in advancing disability rights, promoting inclusive development, and ensuring full compliance with existing legal frameworks designed to eliminate physical and structural barriers in public and private spaces.

Speaking during the engagement, Vice President of NAPWPD, Ambassador Mabe Awala Beatrice, stressed the urgent need for strict enforcement of accessibility standards in public buildings—both existing and newly constructed—as well as in transportation systems, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, major roads, and other critical services.

She commended the Commission’s ongoing efforts in promoting disability inclusion but sought clarity on the pace of implementation of the Accessibility Regulations. She also called for stronger collaboration, effective monitoring mechanisms, and intensified public awareness campaigns to accelerate nationwide compliance.

In his response, the Director of Compliance and Enforcement, Barrister Nkem Uchebulam, reaffirmed the statutory mandate of the Commission and its commitment to protecting the rights of persons with disabilities. He noted that the NCPWD remains focused on the progressive implementation of accessibility standards, with the ultimate goal of ensuring full inclusion and equal participation of persons with disabilities in society.

Also speaking, the Director of Social Integration, Mr. Lawrence Idemudia, welcomed the delegation and highlighted the importance of continuous dialogue and collective advocacy within the disability community, describing them as critical to addressing persistent challenges and strengthening policy implementation.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, outlined ongoing initiatives, enforcement strategies, and partnerships being pursued to promote inclusive infrastructure and equal opportunities. He reaffirmed the Commission’s readiness to work closely with disability organisations to ensure effective enforcement of the Accessibility Regulations.

Both organisations expressed commitment to deepening cooperation through sustained dialogue, joint advocacy, and stakeholder engagement, in line with the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.

The meeting concluded with a renewed resolve to build an inclusive society where no one is left behind.
