On the occasion of this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a global NGO, Sightsavers, has emphasized the critical need for sustainable development through disability inclusion.
Highlighting the theme of 2024, “Sustainable Development: Advancing the Rights of Persons with Disabilities,” the organization called for collective action to dismantle barriers and create a more inclusive society.
In a press release made available to BONews by Tarbo Joy, Communications Associate of Sightsavers Nigeria, Sightsavers noted the pervasive challenges faced by persons with disabilities, emphasizing their exclusion from key aspects of public life, including education and healthcare.
“Persons with disabilities remain among the most marginalized groups, facing barriers to education, employment, healthcare, and participation in public life.
“This year’s theme highlights the urgent need for disability-inclusive policies and practices to ensure no one is left behind in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the group said.
Dr. Joy Shu’aibu, Sightsavers’ Nigeria Country Director, underscored the importance of inclusion as a cornerstone of sustainable development.
She said, “Sustainable development is impossible without inclusion. We must remove the physical, societal, and systemic barriers that prevent persons with disabilities from reaching their full potential.
“At Sightsavers, we are committed to advancing the rights of persons with disabilities through empowerment, partnerships, and community-driven initiatives.”
In Nigeria, Sightsavers has been at the forefront of efforts to break these barriers through initiatives like the SABI-Woman project, which empowers women, girls, and youth with disabilities to overcome challenges and achieve their dreams.
One notable success story is that of Halima Hajara, an 18-year-old visually impaired student from Kano. Having lost her sight at the age of two, Hajara faced significant challenges.
However, through the SABI-Woman program, she was introduced to new opportunities and now earns a living through online sales. Her journey has made her a role model in her community.
Encouraging others, Dr Shu’aibu said, “Don’t cage yourselves, come out and show your potential.”
Dr. Shu’aibu also reflected on Hajara’s story, calling it a testament to the power of inclusive development.
“Hajara’s story is a powerful reminder of what is possible when we invest in inclusive development.
“Women and girls with disabilities are among the most marginalized in our society, yet they have incredible potential to drive change when given the right opportunities. At Sightsavers, we are committed to ensuring that no one is left behind, and we are proud to see girls like Hajara thrive and inspire others.
“This International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we reaffirm our commitment to breaking down barriers and building a more inclusive world,” Dr Shu’aibu stated.
To mark this year’s celebrations, Sightsavers is organizing a series of events across Nigeria – community forums, media engagements, and school awareness campaigns, to raise awareness about disability rights and promote inclusion.
The theme for the 2024 event is: “Sustainable Development: Advancing the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.”
This year’s theme highlights the importance of creating a society where everyone can participate fully and equally. Sightsavers calls on governments, organizations, and communities to prioritize inclusion and invest in initiatives that empower persons with disabilities.
