As Nigeria joins the world in observing Global Lifestyle Medicine Week from May 18 to 24, the Society of Lifestyle Medicine of Nigeria (SOLONg) is spearheading a nationwide campaign to promote stress management and healthy living.
In a press release by SOLONg, the Group stated that the theme for this year’s observance, “Beat STRESS with D.R.E.A.M.S.,” underscores the importance of evidence-based lifestyle interventions in combating stress and chronic diseases.
Global Lifestyle Medicine Week is a worldwide initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the profound impact of lifestyle choices on chronic conditions, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers, which are largely preventable through lifestyle modifications.
Dr. Moyosore Makinde, President of SOLONg, highlighted the global challenge of stress, citing World Health Organization data that reported 190 million people experiencing significantly higher stress levels in 2020. Nigeria’s workforce is particularly affected by work-related stress, making this year’s theme highly relevant.
Dr Makinde said, “Chronic stress is a significant contributor to the development and perpetuation of chronic diseases. It affects the body through hormonal changes, immune system dysregulation, and negative behavioural patterns.”
She noted that “by embracing the principles of Lifestyle Medicine and addressing the multifaceted nature of stress, we can pave the way for a healthier future.”
To address stress and promote overall health, SOLONg advocates for the D.R.E.A.M.S. approach, which stands for “Diet and Healthy Nutrition: Emphasizing predominantly whole, plant-based foods; Relationships: Fostering healthy, positive connections; Exercise: Encouraging regular physical activity; Avoidance of Psychoactive or Toxic Substances: Discouraging the use of alcohol, tobacco, and street drugs;
“Mental Wellbeing and Effective Stress Management: Promoting stress-reducing techniques such as mindfulness and time management; and Sleep: Ensuring adequate and restorative sleep.”
Dr. Mimi Osad Osamwonyi, General Secretary of SOLONg, elaborated the importance of this holistic approach, adding that, “by addressing stress through comprehensive lifestyle changes, we can mitigate its impact on chronic diseases and improve overall health.”
The week-long event will feature various activities, including health talks, workshops, and community engagements aimed at educating the public on stress management and healthy living. The campaign will be visible across news channels, health blogs, social media, institutions, and communities.
Global Lifestyle Medicine Week calls for unified efforts by individuals, stakeholders, and governments to confront chronic diseases as a critical public health issue. SOLONg encourages participation and collaboration to create a healthier future for all.
