The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria has expressed deep concern over the recent allegation of sexual harassment leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
FIDA described the allegation as serious and weighty noting that it warrants immediate, impartial, and thorough investigation.
In a strongly worded statement, the organization noted that if the allegation is proven, it would signify a severe abuse of power and a direct violation of the dignity and rights of women in governance. “Sexual harassment within the corridors of power is more than a personal violation—it is an attack on gender equality, a betrayal of public trust, and a stain on the integrity of governance,” FIDA Nigeria stated.
The association pointed out that such incidents contribute to a toxic culture where women in leadership are subjected to intimidation, coercion, and discrimination. These barriers, according to FIDA, have long hindered female participation in politics, governance, and decision-making.
FIDA Nigeria further condemned any form of intimidation or harassment, stressing that such offenses must not go unpunished. “Swift and expeditious action is necessary to ensure that injustice, where found, does not go unpunished. Prosecution should serve as a stern warning and deterrent against such threats and acts,” the statement urged.
The group also highlighted that this issue is beyond politics. “This is about law, justice, and fundamental human rights,” FIDA said. It cited the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, which guarantees every citizen the right to dignity (Section 34) and freedom from discrimination (Section 42), as well as other legal provisions that criminalize sexual harassment and abuse of authority.
FIDA Nigeria reminded the government of its international obligations, including adherence to The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). This international agreement mandates proactive measures to combat sexual harassment across all sectors.
Expressing concern over the legislative setting of the allegation, FIDA Nigeria said, “What is more worrisome is that this allegation is coming from the Legislative Arm of the Government—a body principally charged with making laws for the entire country. It is disturbing that the head of this arm is the subject of such a grave accusation.”
The organization called for an independent and transparent investigation to uncover the truth and ensure accountability. “Silence or inaction will only embolden perpetrators and deter victims from speaking out,” FIDA Nigeria warned.
FIDA Nigeria stressed that restoring public confidence in governance requires a transparent process. “Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done,” the group stated, adding that power should never be a shield for misconduct.
Additionally, FIDA Nigeria called for measures to protect victims and whistleblowers from retaliation, ensuring that women who speak out do not face intimidation, political persecution, or career setbacks. “Women must be afforded the leeway to speak their truth without fear of backlash or persecution,” FIDA insisted.
The organization urged that this moment be used as a turning point to dismantle systemic barriers discouraging women from leadership roles. “We must create a political and institutional environment where no woman is forced to choose between her dignity and ambition,” FIDA Nigeria asserted.
Reiterating its stance on gender equity, FIDA Nigeria demanded the full implementation of the 35% affirmative action for women in governance. “This must move beyond rhetoric to reality,” the statement read.
FIDA Nigeria has unanimously called on all relevant authorities, civil society organizations, the legal community, and the public to unite in demanding justice and a safer Nigeria for women. “Justice must prevail. The time for action is now!” the organization concluded.
