On January 8, 2022, a writer named Olawale S.S. published an article titled “35 Richest Men in Benue State (2022) via the Nigerian Best website and identified Betty Abah as the number 1 with a 10 million dollar net worth.
The writer described Betty Abah as a “Nigerian journalist, novelist, and women’s and children’s rights campaigner who was born on March 6, 1974. She is the founder and Executive Director of CEE HOPE, a Lagos-based non-profit organization dedicated to the rights and development of girls.
“Betty was born in Otukpo, Benue State, Nigeria’s Middle Belt area. She graduated from the University of Calabar with a bachelor’s degree in English and Literary Studies and a master’s degree in English Literature from the University of Lagos.”
VERIFICATION
A close look at the content of the article written by the author, there was no link to any substantial sources of income that could have made the subject worth 10 million dollars.
The writer simply identified the organization that Betty Abah works with, without necessarily giving any details of businesses the subject has transacted to have been able to accumulate the sum of 10 million dollars net worth.
The content of the article, which is basically a two-paragraph piece, does not provide enough evidence to corroborate the 10 million dollars claim.
The subject, Betty Abah has also taken to her Facebook page to publish a disclaimer that she is not Benue’s richest. She mentioned that it appears the writer pulled out information basically from her organization’s Wikipedia profile and provided an estimate of what she could be worth as the Executive Director, based on mere speculation, an act she described as mischievous and unprofessional.
“I actually have no idea what $10 Million looks like, either stashed in a Ghana-Must-Go bag or any such said assets. It’s either a product of malaria-induced imagination/hallucination or science fiction, but certainly, none of that is true, and I wonder on what premise that character stands to put a price to my worth, or anyone else’s. And I haven’t the slightest idea what their mission is with such a misleading publication,” she wrote.
VERDICT
The claim that Betty Abah worths $10 million is FALSE. The piece has far-reaching implications on the subject as many people could believe the unverified misinformation.
