A corps member serving in Lagos State, Peter Osagie Ifagbuyi, has emerged as the winner of a chemistry quiz competition at the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp.

The graduate of Lagos State University (LASU), Department of Chemistry, was announced as the winner of the competition powered by VSP Botanics after he correctly answered all questions from rounds one and two.

The competition in partnership with the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC), Lagos, was held on Friday, 10 November this year at the ongoing orientation camp, which will wrap up on Tuesday, November 21.

Ifagbuyi competed with nine other contestants who represented their various platoons.

While the winner, a second-class upper-grade graduate, got N1 million, the first runner-up, Jolaolu Balogun, a graduate of Pharmacy, University of Lagos (UNILAG) clinched N500,000.

Bethrandi Chukwudi, a graduate of Medicine, from the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), emerged as the second runner-up with a N250,000 prize.

The founder of VSP Botanics, Odia Victoria, noted that the initiative is to support the corpers as they move to their next stage in life.

“We truly understand what is going on currently and that’s the aim behind this.

“We want to see graduates come out with hope and optimism for the future. In our little way, we want to give them a soft landing into the future,” she said.

On his part, the State Coordinator, NYSC Lagos, Yetunde Baderinwa, emphasised the significance of the initiative.

According to him, “It will go a long way to help the participant and even other corp members. This is very unusual because we pay more attention to only entertainment but this consists of both learning and entertainment.”

For the winner, Ifagbuyi, clinching the title has set him on a new pedestal.

While he appreciated the organisers, he attributed his victory to divine arrangement.

“This is just to let people know they can do anything they are determined to do at any time.

“I was not supposed to be here; I was supposed to exit the camp this evening but someone advised me to register, then I gave it a try,” he expressed excitedly.
