As the Yuletide season spreads warmth and joy across Lagos, the Advocacy for Widows Empowerment Foundation has brought Christmas cheer to widows and their children through its annual “Make A Widow Smile 4 Christmas” event.

The heartfelt programme hosted amid ongoing economic challenges highlighted the importance of empathy amidst economic challenges and reinforced the message that no one should feel forgotten during the holidays.
Ambassador Willie Workman Oga, founder of the foundation, said his commitment since establishing the organization in 2012 has been to care for widows and identify solutions to ease their burdens.
“We want these women to know they are cherished and included in the joy of the season,” Oga said.
The event featured powerful testimonials shared by widows within the community, reflecting on their journeys and the strength they found in unity.

Mrs. Ruth Ejugwu and Mrs. Florence Okosuns, widow of the late Sony Okosuns, offered words of encouragement and peace building, reminding attendees that their stories of loss do not define them and that resilience often shines through the darkest times.
The festive atmosphere included music and dance, featuring performances from gospel artist DebySal and Gladz Hope.
A highlight of the evening was a rendition of “Hear My Cry,” a song composed by Ambassador Oga and dedicated to all widows, capturing the spirit of their struggle and hope.
The gathering also included distribution of generous food packages that enhanced the holiday experience, ensuring that every widow felt the warmth and love of the season.
Ambassador Oga expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and numerous anonymous donors for their support.
“Your unwavering support fuels our mission and significantly impacts the lives of those we serve,” he said.
He called on individuals and organizations to join hands with the foundation, noting that financial constraints remain ongoing challenges for critical initiatives such as the Skillup A Widow Project and the Widow’s Child Educational Fund Support.
“Together, we can create lasting change in the lives of these women and their children. Your contribution can transform despair into hope, making a real difference this holiday and beyond,” Oga urged.
The Advocacy for Widows Empowerment Foundation was established in 2012 to provide support and empowerment opportunities for widows facing economic and social challenges in Nigeria.
