The National Association of Seadogs (NAS), Pyrates Confraternity, Ekiti and Ondo Chapter, El Paso SSO Deck, in collaboration with the Longhorn Deck, Dallas, Texas, USA, has urged Nigerian students to take an active role in politics and humanitarian services to foster societal progress.
This call to action was made during an event organized to commemorate International Women’s Day at Breeders College, Oke-Ogba, Akure, where the female students were admonished to be confident, focused, and determined in pursuing their goals without fear.
Speaking to the students, Hon. Abiodun Olaniyi, President of the NAS El Paso Deck, encouraged the female students to be confident, focused, and determined in pursuing their ambitions.
He emphasized that the association deliberately chose the school to demonstrate a fatherly commitment to empowering young people with the knowledge and tools to drive change, irrespective of gender.
Olaniyi highlighted that NAS was established to provide selfless humanitarian services, including the empowerment of women and youth, as a core part of its mission.
Dr. Ojumu Damilola, Zonal Vice President of the Association, reinforced this message by stressing the critical role of women and students in societal development.
He urged the students not to view themselves as inferior but to actively contribute to shaping a better society.
“A society cannot thrive without women—they are the backbone of our communities. Men are not superior to women; God created us as equals. Women deserve protection, respect, and all the rights granted by the constitution.
“I urge women to know their rights, stand firm, and actively participate in politics. Your voice matters, and your contributions are essential for a better society,” he said.
Dr. Damilola emphasized that women deserve equal rights as enshrined in the constitution and should never be sidelined in decision-making processes.
He further elaborated, “Our association is dedicated to advocating for social change and improving our communities. We understand that the government alone cannot address all societal challenges, so we take proactive steps to tackle them. With about 69 branches worldwide, NAS has been a leader in this effort. I urge students, especially young women, to know their rights, stand firm, and engage in politics and humanitarian initiatives. Your voices and actions are vital for progress.”
Similarly, Mr. Eyitemi Egbi, Vice President 2 of the association, underscored the importance of justice and empowerment for the girl child, a key focus of the event. He encouraged the students to be well-behaved and confident, reminding them that they have the power to contribute to societal development.
The Guest Speaker, Barrister Akerele Oluwayemisi, delivered a presentation titled “The Rights of a Girl Child,” educating the students on their constitutional rights, which include the right to freedom and safety, equal opportunities, good healthcare, education, and protection from early child marriage. She urged them to be bold in defending these rights and pursuing their goals.
The event also featured a donation of a projector to the school by NAS, alongside cash prizes awarded to outstanding students: Adeniji Emmanuella (SSS 1) received ₦10,000, Okolo Felicita (SSS 2) received ₦20,000, and Eze Peace (SSS 3) received ₦30,000. Mr. Maduako Sunday, the Head Administrator of the school, expressed gratitude to NAS for its generosity and dedication to empowering young women.
Through this initiative, NAS reiterated its call for students to actively participate in politics and humanitarian efforts, emphasizing that such involvement is essential for driving meaningful societal change.
