Former U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. John Campbell, has written a book about Nigeria after years of staying in the country.
In the book titled, “Nigeria: What Everyone Needs to Know” and co-authored by Matthew T. Page, Associate Fellow in Chatham House’s Africa Program, Campbell provided an overview of Nigeria, delving into the country’s recent history, politics, culture, corruption, war against terrorism, religion, human rights issues and Nigeria of the future.
Speaking at the launch, Ambassador Campbell, Ralph Bunche Senior Fellow for Africa Policy Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, said the book was inspired as a result of what he has learnt about the country in over 7 years of his stay in Nigeria.
Campbell, in the book, identified some challenges Nigeria face, which include but not limited to population explosion, insecurity, corruption which has affected the power sector among others.
He, however, noted that the peaceful coexistence among the various ethnic groups in Nigeria is remarkable which should be upheld.
The former ambassador who maintained that he is speaking as a private citizen and not representing the US government recommended that for Nigeria to be great in future, more attention must be paid to infrastructure, reforming the military and opportunity must be given for women to participate in politics among others.
He explained that his recommendation for the reform of the military was “informed by what I have seen and well-documented reports from local and international Non Governmental Organizations which is a consensus that the security situation in Nigeria is pathetic.”
In his remark, the U.S. Consulate Political Section Chief, Tat Osman congratulated the author for giving the world an opportunity to know more about Nigeria.
