The Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Lagos State Command, has empowered 100 widows of deceased police officers with cash gifts and food items to commemorate the 2026 International Widows’ Day.

The outreach, held on Monday at the POWA Secretariat in GRA, Ikeja, was themed “Justice, Dignity and Economic Power for Police Widows.” It was organised in line with the directive of the National President of POWA, Mrs Mutiat Disu, to promote compassion, inclusion and social welfare among vulnerable members of the police community.

Speaking at the POWA Widows Support Programme, the Chairperson of POWA, Lagos State Command, Mrs Adekemi Tijani, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to improving the welfare of widows of fallen police officers through sustained support, empowerment and compassion.

She described the widows as resilient women who made enormous sacrifices alongside their late spouses in service to the nation, stressing that they deserve continued care, dignity and encouragement.

Tijani urged the beneficiaries to remain hopeful despite the challenges they face, assuring them that POWA would continue to create opportunities aimed at improving their welfare and economic wellbeing.

She also encouraged the widows to remain united, embrace empowerment initiatives and continue striving for a better future for themselves and their families.

She appealed to corporate organisations, development partners and well-meaning Nigerians to support initiatives that improve the welfare of families of police officers who paid the ultimate price in service to the country.

The POWA chairperson expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu, the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force and other partners for their continued support of the association’s humanitarian programmes.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Secretary of the Late Police Officers’ Wives Association, Mrs Modupe Adebayo, thanked POWA for the intervention, describing the support as timely in view of the prevailing economic challenges.

She said the cash gifts and food items would help ease the hardships faced by many of the widows and appealed to the association to sustain the initiative.

In addition to the empowerment programme, beneficiaries received free medical screening and participated in a health awareness session, which included blood pressure and blood sugar tests as well as health education aimed at promoting their overall wellbeing.
