Thirty-six teams across different categories, including visually impaired students, have qualified to represent Nigeria at the Codeavour 7.0 International Championship scheduled to be held in Jakarta in May.

The teams emerged during the Codeavour 7.0 National Championship grand finale held at Charterhouse Lagos, following earlier regional contests hosted at Ecobank Nigeria’s headquarters in Lagos and Cosmopolitan University Abuja in Abuja.

Among the standout participants was ‘Beyond Sight,’ a team of visually impaired students from Lagos State whose assistive technology project captured the attention of judges.

The team designed AI-powered audio glasses aimed at helping visually impaired individuals navigate their surroundings and live more independently. They also developed a smart AI-enabled walking stick capable of detecting environmental hazards such as smoke and fire, demonstrating how assistive technologies can improve safety for vulnerable groups.

Speaking at the event, Habeebah Ibrahim, Codeavour country partner and chief executive officer of Beebahtics Enterprise, praised the participants and described the projects as evidence of the impact of inclusive technology education.

According to Ibrahim, the organisation is helping to bridge Nigeria’s STEM gap by partnering with manufacturers to provide hands-on educational kits that equip students with globally competitive technology skills.

She said the mission of Codeavour in Nigeria is to democratise access to STEM education.

“Seeing the students qualify for an international stage in Indonesia is a testament to the transformative power of inclusive education,” she said.

Ibrahim noted that the success of visually impaired students in the competition highlights how innovation can thrive when the right tools and inclusive learning environments are provided.

The Rector of Yaba College of Technology, Ibraheem Abdul, commended the ingenuity displayed by the students, noting that their projects reflect promising prospects for Nigeria’s engineering and software development sectors.

Similarly, Mamu Muhammad, said the strong showing of teams from different regions indicates a growing national interest in technology education.

According to him, the national finals brought together young innovators from diverse backgrounds, united by creative problem-solving and technological innovation.

Also speaking, John Todd expressed pride in hosting the championship, describing the event as a demonstration of Nigeria’s capacity to nurture globally competitive innovators.

The competition featured three tracks and multiple age groups where students showcased projects in coding, artificial intelligence, and robotics designed to solve real-world problems.

In Track One Team Focus Frontier (Elementary), Intercontinental Team Kano (Junior), and Team Biteback (Senior), with Beyond Sight finishing second. Track Two, Code Crushers (Elementary), Trinity Tribe (Junior), and Team City (Senior); and Track Three, Supercoders (Elementary), Focus Frontier (Junior), and Robogha (Senior).

The qualified teams will now represent Nigeria at the international championship on May 16 in Jakarta, where they will present their AI-driven innovations on a global stage.
