As part of efforts to provide critical healthcare services and strengthen advocacy for social inclusion, the Albinism Association of Nigeria (AAN) has successfully conducted a large-scale medical outreach and awareness programme for persons with albinism across the six council areas of Abuja under the White Fire Project.

Funded by Fondation Pierre Fabre and implemented in collaboration with Big Feline Agency, the outreach brought together community members, healthcare professionals, volunteers, and beneficiaries.

The initiative focused on expanding access to dermatological and eye care while raising public awareness about albinism.

During the outreach, beneficiaries received free skin screenings, eye examinations, general medical consultations, health counseling, and ultraviolet (UV) protective materials such as sunscreen and protective clothing. Individuals requiring further care were referred to specialised health facilities.

The Association’s National General Secretary, Comrade Adeiyi Onah Daniel, who spoke on behalf of the Executive Director of AAN, Dr. Mrs. Bisi Bamishe, described the programme as evidence of the power of partnerships and community-driven healthcare interventions. He appreciated community leaders and stakeholders for mobilising beneficiaries and supporting the outreach.

Onah explained that the White Fire Project integrates medical support with creative advocacy to address both the health and social challenges faced by persons with albinism.

AAN Programme Manager, Joseph Akuse, noted that the project is designed to improve health outcomes through targeted medical interventions, preventive education, and media storytelling that amplifies the lived experiences of persons with albinism.

The medical team was led by Dr. Olanrewaju Falodun and included Dr. Utane Adama, Dr. Rabi Karaye, Dr. Ojobo Dorcas, Dr. Moses Esuga and Dr. Emeka, supported by nurses Iji Victoria Erima, Godfrey Ifiokobong F., and Torhemba Atsa Joy.

Beyond clinical services, the programme featured awareness and sensitisation sessions aimed at correcting misconceptions about albinism and promoting acceptance and equal opportunity. As part of its advocacy component, the project will also deploy creative storytelling formats—including spoken word, interviews, and digital productions—to deepen public understanding.

Beneficiaries described the intervention as impactful and life-changing, particularly given the limited access to specialised dermatological and eye care services. Community stakeholders similarly praised the initiative for helping to reduce stigma and improve health awareness.

In his closing remarks, Comr. Adeiyi Onah Daniel commended the medical team, volunteers, and participants for their commitment. He expressed gratitude to Fondation Pierre Fabre for supporting the initiative and recognising AAN as a credible partner in advancing healthcare and rights for persons with albinism.

He reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to expanding healthcare access, protecting the rights of persons with albinism, and building inclusive communities where they can live healthy and dignified lives.
