Senegal is set to host the fourth edition of the Africa Facts Summit from October 1-2, 2025. The summit brings together fact-checking organisations and information integrity experts from across the continent.

The summit, which is scheduled to take place in Dakar, marks the first time the event will be hosted in a French-speaking African country. This milestone reflects the Africa Facts network’s significant growth since its inception.

The network now brings together member organisations operating in multiple languages, including English, French, Arabic and Amharic, united by a shared mission to foster information resilience across Africa.

Valdez Onanina, Editor-in-Chief of Africa Check’s Francophone office, said the location choice was particularly symbolic.

“It is particularly symbolic that this fourth edition of the Africa Facts Summit is being held for the first time in a French-speaking African country. This historic first comes at a pivotal moment when challenges related to disinformation and information integrity represent pressing issues for our media ecosystems,” Onanina said.

He described the problems as major emergencies for African societies, making the Dakar gathering strategic for strengthening collective resilience against these challenges.

The summit will bring together diverse stakeholders in the information integrity ecosystem to explore innovative projects and advancements in fact-checking practices used in daily operations.

The event will feature panel discussions, workshops and show-and-tell sessions focusing on challenges and opportunities in collaborative efforts to address misinformation in Africa.

Hlalani Gumpo, Africa Check’s Head of Outreach and Impact, praised the continued commitment of partners despite challenging operating conditions.

“Despite the challenging conditions under which information integrity practitioners increasingly operate, the unwavering commitment of various partners and the continued growth of the Africa Facts network remain clear reflections of collective resilience,” Gumpo said.

“The summit not only reaffirms our shared purpose but also strengthens opportunities for ongoing knowledge exchange that sustains progress and deepens impact,” she added.

The summit will conclude with the African Fact-Checking Awards gala dinner, described as the longest-running and largest awards programme honouring fact-checking journalism in Africa.

The awards feature three categories: Fact-Check of the Year by a Working Journalist, Fact-Check of the Year by a Professional Fact-Checker, and Fact-Check of the Year by a Student Journalist.

Winners in the working journalist and professional fact-checker categories will each receive $3,000, while runners-up will receive $1,500.

The student journalist category winner will receive $2,000, with the runner-up getting $1,000.

Tickets for the 2025 Africa Facts Summit will go on sale starting July 21, organisers announced.
