Relatives of a 67 year old man, Mr. Musibau Akinwunmi who died a day after being released from a police detention, have alleged that he died as a result of the illegal detention.
Family members of the deceased who claimed that his detention was unlawful have also accused the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State of unlawfully detaining Akinwunmi for eleven days after which he died.
Akinwunmi was arrested by three police officers around 10pm in his residence and was unlawfully detained on the 6th of May 2019, the family alleged.
It was reported that the police denied his friends and family access to him under the guise of conducting a special underground investigation, debarring him from reaching out for his medications as well. However, Mr Akinwumi was released after interventions by Barrister Irenikase and Mr Elijah, a friend of the deceased, after he has spent over a week in police custody.
It was gathered that the inhumane treatments he received in the detention was responsible for his death because he died on the 18th of May 2019, a day after his release from police custody due to his deteriorated health.
The late Akinwunmi who got arrested just three days after he had a special Islamic prayer session for his late wife Mrs. Simiat Akinwunmi and the session later resulted to a mini party in his residence at Osiele, was said to be a hypertensive and Tuberculosis patient.
He was also said to have suffered depression due to his collapsed farm. He fell victim of fraudsters and his farmland became comatose as a result.
Our correspondent who visited the police Division at Osiele, Abeokuta Ogun State under the leadership of Superintendent Ashimolowo gathered that Mr. Akinwunmi was petitioned by two community elders as an accomplice to his gay son, Abdulwasiu Abiodun Akinwunmi.
According to information, Mr. Musibau Akinwunmi was petitioned for obstructing justice by conniving with his son, Abdulwasiu Abiodun Akinwunmi in misleading the police and the community as a whole after he (Abdulwasiu Abiodun Akinwunmi) escaped being arrested for gay practices and has been on police wanted list of gay members.
All efforts to apprehend Abdulwasiu Abiodun have been abortive hence, his father was petitioned as the brain behind his son’s hiding.
One of Abdulwasiu Abiodun’s siblings was said to have unknowingly confirmed to the petitioners that the money spent on the mini party was sent by Abdulwasiu from hiding.
Our correspondent also reached out to barrister Irenikase, and we were told the Akinwunmi’s family in conjunction with Mr. Elijah is suing Ogun State Commissioner Of Police to seek for justice against the death of Mr. Akinwunmi.
