The Inspector General of Police, M. A. Adamu has disclosed that Seven Hundred and Ninety Six (796) suspects were arrested for various electoral offences across the nation during the Gubernatorial and State Houses of Assembly Elections.
This was disclosed in a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba.
The IGP added that the latest arrests bring the total number of all the suspects arrested in the two last rounds of elections to One Thousand, One Hundred and Nineteen (1,119).
The IGP who pledges wholesome investigation and diligent prosecution in concert with INEC also enjoined the public to cooperate with security operatives in states where supplementary elections would be conducted on March 23rd.
The IGP has also directed five Deputy Inspector General of Police, three Assistant Inspector Generals and fifteen commissioner of Police to provide supervison and support in all the states holding supplementary elections.
“The IG warned politicians not to undermine the electoral process by engaging in untoward practices such as snatching of ballot boxes, vote trading and violence of all kinds, stressing that violators would be made to face the full consequences of the law”, the statement added.
The DIGs deployed are: DIG Usman Tilli Abubakar, mni – Adamawa State, DIG Yakubu Jubrin, fsi – Benue State, DIG Frederick Taiwo Lakanu, fdc – Plateau State, DIG Anthony Ogbizi Michael, fdc – Kano State and DIG Godwin C. Nwobodo, fdc – Bauchi State. Out of the fifteen (15) additional CPs deployed, three (3) each were deployed to Benue and Sokoto States, two (2) each were deployed to Adamawa, Bauchi, Kano and Plateau States while Imo State got one.
